Professional Photographer Session Pricing

Pricing…something that each and every photographer struggles to establish within their own business.  Every photographer prices their sessions differently, they offer different time allotments, types of sessions, products, and more.

As of late, I have noticed many times in my news feed from buy/sell/trade sites, people looking for a photographer.  And it never fails that there are over thirty different names mentioned.  Going back to a previous post, I encourage you to make sure that the photographer you choose is legitimate and registered!  50% of the time, the photographers mentioned in these threads are not legitimate…they aren’t registered with the state, don’t pay taxes, and it is usually a hobby.

This is where the confusion, and frustration, comes for many.  Often times I receive inquiries on session pricing, what comes with the sessions, etc.  I am proud and happy to give all information to perspective clients and it always excites me that there is the possibility to get to know a new family or couple and be able to capture a very important moment in their life!  But, many times the response I receive to my pricing is this, “Why are you so much more expensive than XXX Photography?  They only charge $20 for an hour session and all digitals are included.”  To this there is no simple answer, but one I felt I should share with all of you! 🙂

Professional Photographers base their session pricing on many things.  Equipment costs(camera bodies, lenses, memory cards, hard drives, lighting, and more), equipment upkeep, software, computers, the amount of time for each session, post processing time to perfect your session, session delivery, print ordering, accounting time, length of time in business, talent, and location.  Pro photographers also have to take into account taxes and other bills, from sales tax and licensing fees, to social security payments and insurance costs.  Being a professional business is very expensive and those costs are often reflected in your session costs.  Every photographer’s list of what makes up their session pricing will be different, but these are many of the most common you will hear talked about among photographers.

One way that I keep my session costs lower is by not including the digital files.  Some photographers want nothing to do with ordering prints for clients, so they bump up their session costs to include the digital files.  Others like myself, love to order client prints/products and so I do not include that cost in my session pricing.  I want to make sure that my clients receive the best print/product possible and I trust my professional printers to do this for me.  I personally like to set session pricing, allow my clients to build their own print/product package, and if digitals are wanted, then ala cart pricing will be discussed.

As one’s business grows and the years pass by, you will see prices rise, this is due to the continuous equipment costs/upkeep that photographers encounter as well as their talent and client base evolving.  My prices are no longer what they were three years ago, but most photographers will say the same thing, as they grow, so do their session prices.

A little something to keep in mind…the next time a photographer is offering cheap sessions and great perks, ask them if they are legitimate…are they registered with the state, pay taxes yearly, pay sales tax, pay social security, and follow government guidelines?  If the answer is no to any of those questions, there is a reason why their sessions are so much less.  Pro photographers aren’t doing this as a hobby, it is their love, their life, they are very dedicated to their craft, it’s what pays the bills, and supports their family.

On behalf of all professional photographers, thank you for choosing us to capture your important life moments, we love what we do, and seeing your smiles in our images is priceless!

Baby Shower

What’s more fun than getting to announce a shower for a mommy to be?!  I just recently finished up these fun designs for a baby shower!  Thrown by a friend of mine, I was honored when she came to me asking to put together something for her sister in law!  She gave me the info, colors, and theme and we ran with the invitation design from there.  She then decided to add a little tag to each of the popcorn goody bags, what a cute idea and saying!  This little one is already a very lucky girl!

| AHS Bluestreak Marching Band | Sights & Sounds 2014

I once again had the opportunity to capture a very important event for my high school! The AHS Band recently purchased new uniforms and I was honored when the director asked if I would be the first professional to photograph the group in the new uniforms as they revealed them to the public at their annual Sights & Sounds Concert to wrap up the marching season. The AHS band is one of great pride, tradition, and excellence, always striving to be the best and continuing to learn and grow. I can speak from experience of these things, there is, and was, no greater feeling than wearing the blue and gold on Friday nights and representing our school. Working with this group and their staff this year has been even more special for me, as the current director is also an AHS Alum and former classmate; it has been wonderful to see the tradition continue! Congrats to the AHS Marching Band and staff on a wonderful 2014 season!

And yes, I can admit that I was a sophomore in high school when the previous uniforms were purchased! 😉

Archbold Bands

This fall I have had the great privileged and honor to be a part of my high school once again!  From capturing the new Alumni Band and the AHS final marching show to a new logo, it has been wonderful to be a part of this great tradition again.  Archbold bands have had a tradition of excellence that has reached back over 40 years, and the current director of bands is not about to let that disappear.  She has taken on the challenge of continually pushing her students to reach a potential that she knows is there and that she knows they can achieve.  This is not only obvious in the classroom, but on the field as well.  Just watching these high schoolers march you can see discipline and pride in every step.  We wanted to create a fresh and new look for the band program that shows their past and present.  Creating a logo can be a daunting task for some, but we start out with a look, then build and edit from there.  Sometimes logos need detail and lots going on, others like this one, need to be less complex to really stand out and catch your attention.  You will notice the Streak in the background, this has been the logo for Archbold for many many years, while the specific A that has been used has changed a little over the years.  The A seen in this logo is the current A that the school uses, so we have incorporated the past, present, and future into a logo that the band program can be proud to call theirs.  I have had a wonderful time working with the director, whom also happens to be a fellow classmate and AHS Alumni, getting to know her family, and seeing her continue the proud Archbold Band traditions!  Congrats to the staff and members of the AHS Marching Bluestreak sand Archbold Bands on a wonderful fall season!

Sharp Family

What’s more enjoyable than a family that finds fun in everything, no matter what the topic?! A family that has known my family for as long as I can remember! A session that went from serious poses to throwing leaves at one another and becoming lifestyle is one of my favorite things! We had a slightly windy Saturday, but in true farm life fashion, we rolled with the punches and made the wind work in our favor, if ya can’t beat it, join it! Thank you Sharp Family for a wonderful Saturday!

Bre Sharp 2014 Liberty Center Senior

I have a very special place in my heart for farm kids, 4-Hers & FFA members especially! Growing up one myself, I know the responsibilities they have and what it means to be a part of organizations deeply rooted in pride and tradition and being a part of family farms. I got to spend a great Wednesday evening with the gorgeous Bre! A senior involved in basketball, volleyball, and a whole hearted country girl who loves her t-shirts and jeans! A girl after my own heart, lol! Congrats Bre and best of luck this next year!
